Abstract

743,773. Knitting. WILDMAN MANUFACTURING CO. Jan. 21, 1952 [April 3, 1951], No. 1668/52. Class 74 (2). During part of the knitting or narrowing cycles, the fabric is held down by either the jack sinkers only or the dividers only as necessary to prevent a splicing yarn from falling off the nose of the outside sinker or having its standing points incorrectly positioned in relation to sinkers and dividers after the lateral shift of narrowing points and from then being wrapped around the nose of the outside sinker on the return trip of the splicing yarn carrier and perhaps pierced by an additional needle, to produce unsightly enlarged or additional loops LSL, KISL or KISLW. The sinkers and dividers are operated by separate catch bars SCB, DB. During yarn laying, the sinkers are actuated from above the fabric which is held down by the advanced dividers only, whilst, during stripping of transferred stitches from the narrowing points and subsequent rise of the needles through the sinker throats, the dividers are wholly or partly retracted and the sinkers advanced to overlie the fabric. For this purpose, during ordinary knitting, the sinker catch bar is reciprocated and moved vertically by cams 12, 16 on the main cam shaft MS, whilst the divided bar is independently operated by a cam 19 on that shaft; but during loop transfer operations, the cam shaft is shogged so that these cams are replaced by appropriately shaped cams 12a, 16a and 19a. Short-nosed sinkers S and dividers D may be used, the top edges 26 of the dividers being lower than the upper edges of the brows 24 of the sinkers to accommodate the yarn guides during the loop transfer operation and to receive certain of the yarns in position to be engaged by the brows of the advancing sinkers and swept down into their throat 22 and into alignment with the divider throats 23. The forward ends of the edges 26 may be relieved at 27. The divider noses may be provided with slits 28 into which the turned portion of the yarn at the selvedge will be drawn, to provide a tighter selvedge. Specifications 683,826 and 722,318 are referred to.
