[Class 74 (ii)] The catch bar of a straight-bar machine comprises two separately movable parts 10a, 10b, a front part for engaging in front of the sinker butts to retract them and a rear part for engaging the dividing sinkers to advance them. The arrangement renders unnecessary the rising and falling movements of the catch bar. In one form, Fig. 1, the parts 10a, 10b are operated by separate cam-engaging levers 17, 18. The rear part 10b may have a lip engaging in front of the dividing sinkers 13" so that the dividing sinkers are at all times controlled by the part 10b. In a modification, Fig. 5, the rear part 10b is operated by a cam-controlled lever 28, and movement is transmitted from the rear part 10b to the front part 10a through one or more friction boxes 26. The amplitude of the movement of the front part 10a is determined by stops, and during the retracting movement the front part 10a may be positively connected to the rear part by a pivoted member 33 mounted upon the lever 28. The member 33 engages a rod 34 to release it from the front part 10a.
