[Class 74 (ii)] A mechanism for feeding yarn to the needles 1 of a circular machine comprises a yarn guide 3 and an associated trapper. The yarn, held between the guide and the trapper, is introduced to the needles by being extended from front to back of the sinkers so as to be engaged by a following sinker 2<1>. The guide is slidably mounted in a swivel 4 carried by a bracket 5 attached to the underside of the top plate 6 of the machine. The end of the guide is attached to a crank 8, rotated by a lever 26, which, when operated, imparts a reciprocatory motion to the guide. The trapper comprising movable fixed jaws 10, 9, is operated by a lever 29. A series of cams 18, 19, 20, rotated through a clutch by the action of a toothed rod 15 on a ratchet 14. actuates the levers operating the guide and trapper. The trapper is positioned above the sinkers and the guide is movable from front to back of the sinkers so that initially the guide is swung downwards extending the yarn, the end of which is held by the trapper, from front to back of the sinkers and in such a position as to be engaged by the following sinker 2<1>. As the yarn is further extended by the sinker and taken by the needles, the guide is swung upwards above the sinkers to continue feeding the yarn to the needles, and the trapper releases the yarn. Feeding of the yarn is discontinued by the guide being withdrawn and the yarn severed by the trapper and held in readiness for the next introduction. To ensure that the yarn is initially engaged and taken a sinker is adapted to project further than the others and the corresponding needle is prematurely lowered. The mechanism may be used in machines having bearded or latch needles and having rotary or stationary needle cylinders.
