Abstract

711,787. Knitting - machines. MELLOR, BROMLEY & CO., Ltd. Nov. 20, 1951 [Nov. 20, 1950], No. 28326/50. Class 74(2) A device for introducing into and withdrawing a yarn from operation in a cylinder-and-dial machine comprises a pivoted gripper G adapted to position the yarn adjacent the needles where it is engaged by a hooked member 26 slidable in the dial needle bed to draw the yarn into the path of the needles. To withdraw the yarn from operation the gripper is swung upwardly. to re-engage the yarn and to sever it. A number of yarns are fed through stationery guides 4 in a bracket 2 on the dial cam box and a gripper is provided for each yarn. When it. is desired to substitute one yarn for another, as during splicing, a control shaft 29 is rotated by mechanism controlled from a pattern chain. The control shaft 29 carries a cylinder cam 39 having grooves 38, 46 effecting movement of linkage and lever 31, 34, 36 and 43 respectively. The control shaft also carries a cam 28 adapted to rack round a series of notched selector discs 23 controlling the movement of the grippers. The initial movement of the shaft 29 causes the lever 43 to move forward and project a hooked rod 16 slidable in a tube 13, and constituting the gripper, by its end 47 engaging the end of the rod of the gripper the associated yarn of which is being fed' to the needles. Further movement of the shaft 29 causes a rod 32 secured to the arm 31 of the linkage to raise the gripper so as to cause the projections 22 of their pivoted supporting lugs 20 to move clear of the notched discs 23, which are then rotated by the cam 28. The linkage is then operated to allow the grippers to fall and the projections 22 to engage their discs, the withdrawn yarn being engaged by the hook of its gripper which hook is then retracted into the tube 13 by a pin 18 secured to the hooked rod 16 being engaged by a second rod 32<1> on the arm 31 of the linkage. The discs are suitably notched to permit a fresh yarn now to be introduced to the needles, the projection 22 of the appropriate gripper engaging a notch in the disc so that the gripper moves downwardly until its end is below the dial needles. The remaining grippers are held in a raised inoperative position by their projections resting on the periphery of their discs. At this stage the hooked member 26 is projected and retracted so as to draw the yarn into the path of the needles, a member 9 being provided on the bracket 2 to assist the taking of the yarn by the .needles. Simultaneously the hooked rod 16 is projected by an extension 48 engaging a pin 50 on the rod thereby releasing the yarn. When securing a withdrawn yarn, the gripper severs the yarn. Mechanism is provided for rendering the drive to the shaft 29 inoperative. The invention may be applied to a superposed cylinder machine.
