[Class 74 (ii)] A gripping device is moved from non-feeding position to take the yarn to the needles of a knitting-machine, and is subsequently returned to the original position to re-engage the yarn when the yarn is withdrawn from the needles. The gripping device may comprise an inner fixed part 2 mounted between the spaced limbs 3a of a U-shaped part 3 which is pivotally mounted upon the part 2 so that the device can be opened and closed. The device is mounted upon an arm 4a of a carrier rod 4; the arm 4a engages in a slot 13 in a bracket 5, and the rod is moved axially under control of a cam or cams and a spring. Abutments 14, 15 are provided at the ends of the slot 13 so that the device is closed when it returns to non-feeding position and is opened when it has presented the yarn to the needles 8. The yarn guide C may be operated by the rod 4; the part 4a engages a toothed sector 16 meshing with a pinion 18 rotating with the guide C. Two or more gripping devices may be provided at one feeder so that more than one yarn can be laid close to the needle stems at the one time. Three thread guides may be arranged for rotation about the same axis towards and away from the needles, and one of the guides is movable axially under spring control so that on its return movement its yarn-feeding end is moved into the plane of movement of the gripping device. The invention is described in connection with a rotary needle cylinder machine, and is stated to be applicable to plain or rib machines and to stationary needle cylinder machines and to flat machines.
