Abstract
557,458. Knitting-machines. TOONE (NOTTINGHAM), Ltd., B., TOONE, R. N., and ALLEN, T. L. May 15, 1942, No. 6590. [Class 74 (ii)] An additional thread, e.g. a splicing thread, is severed so that all the thread extending from the point of severance to the needles is knitted in, and is re-introduced so that the free end is also knitted into the fabric. In one form, Fig. 4, the additional thread S is fed to the needles by a pivoted guide 12, and a trapping and severing device 33 is arranged to sever the thread in its path to the guide while the guide is still in operative position. After severing the thread, the device 33 moves to a position within the needle circle such that the guide in moving from inoperative to operative position engages the thread and threads it through a lateral slot in the guide. The trapping and severing device 33 consists of a sleeve 30 connected to a pinion 27 engaging a toothed segment 26, and a plunger 31 arranged within the sleeve and pressed upwardly by a spring also arranged within the sleeve. The upper end of the plunger 31 engages a fixed cam track 29. The toothed segment 26 is mounted upon a lever 24 operated by the usual push rod 23 which controls the movement of the thread guide 12. In a modification, Fig. 9, the additional thread is fed through a stationary eye 40 in the throat of the latch ring 35 and a trapping and severing device 41 is movable to the outside of the needle circle to cut and trap the thread and is movable to the inside of the needle circle to re-introduce the thread between the needles. The device 41 is arranged on a member 45 slidable in a pivoted guide 46 and pivoted at its upper end to a crank arm 47 connected to a pinion 48. The pinion engages a slidable rack member 49 operated by a lever 44 spring pressed against a push bar 51. The device 41 comprises a relatively stationary blade 52 and a blade 53 pivoted to it, a cam on the blade 53 engaging a stop 56 to close the blades. In another form, the thread is supplied by a movable feeder 72 to a stationary eye 70, Fig. 18, and the trapping and severing device 71 is also movable from outside to within the needle circle and is operated by a push bar 78, movement of an arm 73a carrying the device serving through a second arm 73b to determine the movement in and out of feeding position of the feeder 72. Specifications 532,520 and 532,586 are referred to.
