Prior to the machine latch needles 1 of a straight-bar rib machine receiving their initial course of yarn a series of latch opening points 4 are advanced and engage beneath the latches of the needles whereafter the points are withdrawn and in so doing open the latches. The latch opening points have their ends turned at right angles to their shanks, so that by shogging the point bar holding them sideways, after it has been advanced, the point ends can engage beneath the latches. The point bar 3 is secured to arms 13 mounted to slide in a slideway 12, Fig. 1, and these arms are secured to a lever 17 controlled by a link 18 and cam operated lever 19 to be advanced and retracted at desired times. A latch 26 controlled by a disc 23 determines when the lever 19 is operative. A projection 13a on the arm 13 engages a switch 29 when the arm is fully advanced and this energizes a solenoid 31, Fig. 2, such that through its spring connection with the point bar 3, the bar 3 is caused to shog sideways and engage the inturned ends of its points beneath the latches of the machine needles. The points are then withdrawn simultaneously opening the latches, and when the arm 13 is fully withdrawn the projection 13a engages a second switch 30 which switches off the solenoid whereby the point bar returns to its initial position. Alternatively, the point bar may be shogged by mechanism driven by an electro-magnetic clutch which is controlled by the switches 29, 30.
