The sliding tongues 3 of the needles 1 of a warp machine are selectively coupled to the continuously reciprocating operating bar 13 whereby the needles are rendered operative or inoperative or capable of producing tuck stitches. The hook portions 2 of the needles are secured to the continuously reciprocating needle operating bar 6 which in conjunction with the bar 13 determines the knitting operations of the needles. The bar 13 houses a series of pins 17 which are selectively projected under the control of electro magnets to engage or miss extensions 9 of the sliding tongues 3. Consequently depending upon the operation of the electromagnets as controlled by a programme control the pins 17 are either projected or unaffected to determine operation of the needles. The pins 17 may be projected by the action of the electromagnets or withdrawn being normally projected by springs. A bar 27 coupled to the bar 6 or to the bar 13 engages the top of the extensions 9 to return the sliding tongues to their initial positions. Alternatively the pins 17 may be replaced by wires which are actuated by electromagnets. The pins may be actuated directly by the armatures of the electromagnets or by an intermediate slide. In the latter case a grid returns the pins to their initial unselected position after the needles have knitted.
