Each of a bank of selector levers 130 is either projected into or withdrawn from engagement with the jack butts at a corresponding level by the influence of electro-magnets appropriately energized to cause the appropriate movement of the lever whereby selection of the needles for patterning purposes can be achieved on a circular machine. In a multifeed cylinder and dial machine the selector levers 130 are pivoted at 139 to an arm 133a of a generally U-shaped frame, the two arms 133a, 133b support electromagnets having coil windings 146. A lever 142 pivoted at 147 to the frame is coupled by a link 141 to the selector lever 130. The lever 142 carries a permanent magnet 143 which extends between the electromagnets. Consequently depending on the pattern a suitable pulse to the electromagnets causes the lever 142 to be pivoted in one direction or the other and the toggle connection with the selector lever causes it to project into or be retracted from the path of the butts on the jacks whereby selection is achieved by missing or pressing the jacks inwardly whereby the operative ones are raised to elevate the needles. An arm 150 limits the movement of the selector levers. The electromagnets can be adjusted to vary their effectiveness. Stop bolts 163 can also be used to determine the limits of movement of the lever 142. The series of selector levers each with its control electromagnets can be secured in a block and mounted as a unit on the underside of the machine bed ring 112 surrounding the needle cylinder. A manually operated slide 151 mounted at the bottom of the assembly can be projected to move the jacks inwardly irrespective of the selection and to render all of them inoperative whereby the needles remain in a non knitting position. Suitable programme means supplies pulses to the electromagnets according to the desired pattern.
