In an electromagnetic needle selection arrangement in which each needle has an associated magnet a spring serving as an armature controls the needle via an intermediate member. In one embodiment. Fig. 2 of a flat machine, each needle 2 is controlled by a jack 3 whose butt 5 is pushed into the bed by a cam 12 as it approaches the magnet 18. The armature spring 14 is similarly forced against the magnet poles by cam 13. If the magnet is energised the spring 14, on its release by cam 13, is disengaged from a spring 4 which pushes butt 5, on its release by cam 12, into the range of a rise cam 10, Fig. 1 (not shown). If spring 14 remains in its position shown spring 4 remains depressed and butt 5 is not actuated by cam (20). Selections may be made to bring the needle into knitting or tucking tracks.
