In a knitting machine, the needles with their associated jacks 3 or the like move past a selection station where selectors are provided, one of which can actuate each jack either to or from the position in which its associated needle will knit, each selector being movable between a rest position and a position in which it actuates its associated jacks being biassed away from one of these positions where it may be held by permanently urged holding means, means being provided for simultaneously retaining the selector against its biassing means and moving the holding means to inoperative position and electromagnetic means for releasing. the holding means or causing it to be held for selection. A shown jacks 3 have two butts 4, and (4') Fig. 3 (not shown) the upper ones 4 being selector butts. Butts 4 are engaged by the arms 5a of levers 5 whose other arms 5b are engaged by compression springs 60. Rotary cams 12 have projections 13, 14 which engage a spring 7 and arms 5b at the same time. If a particular jack is not to be selected, a coil 11 surrounding a permanent magnet 10 is energized to nullify its effect and, as cam 12 rotates, spring 7 is disengaged by projection 13 or 14 and moves forward to engage a hook 5c on arm 5a so that, when projection 14 or 13 subsequently disengages arm 5b, the lever is held by spring 7. Stud 5d on selected levers engages a groove on cam 12 formed by walls 15, 16 to hold the lever in selected position. In another modification, two armed levers 23 controlled by traction spring 24 are normally in selected position and are withdrawn by spring 24 unless held by spring 7.
