A pattern wheel has needle lifting elements 1 which are urged into their operative positions by springs 11 and controlled by cams 17 which rotate relative thereto. The elements 1 may be locked in their inoperative position by springs 9 which have noses 9b which engage in notches 1c of the needle lifting elements. The arrangement is such that prior to selection all the elements 1 are returned to their inoperative positions where selected ones of the springs 9 are allowed to drop into position to retain the elements 1 in their inoperative position by engagement with the nose 9b. The selection mechanism is shown in Fig. 6 and comprises an electromagnet 15b and two permanent magnets 15a and 15c. All the springs 9 are raised by the cam 18 and held by the magnet 15a. Selected ones of the springs 9 are allowed to drop i.e. are not attracted by the magnet 15b and engage the elements 1 as at 9<SP>1</SP>. Others, as at 9<SP>11</SP>, are retained in a non-engaging position which is assisted by the permanent magnet 15c. The axis XX of the pattern wheel in this case is inclined in the usual way to the axis of the needle cylinder. A similar mechanism in Fig. 9 (not shown) has the needle engaging elements acting longitudinally of the needles. Fig. 8aC shows an arrangement wherein the needle engaging elements are jacks 1 and are raised upwardly to a limited extent by springs 111. Selection takes place by means of an electromagnet 115 (not shown) and selected jacks are raised above the level of cam 120 by the spring 111 and unselected jacks are retained below it. The needles may be raised to the tuck position by direct action of the cam 130 or to the full knitting position by the cam 120 and jack 1. The electromagnet may be controlled by a jacquard system or film strips.
