1296130 Knitting-machines WARNER & SWASEY CO 6 May 1970 [13 May 1969] 21827/70 Heading D1C In a circular machine in which the needles 17 are actuated by pivoted jacks 20 the butts 25 are selectively withdrawn from cam track 30 by selector jacks 53 having a staggered series of butts 60 and selected by a corresponding series of electromagnetic devices at each station. The lower ends 54 of all jacks 53 are deflected radially outwards so that butt 56 engages raise cam 57. Unselected jacks are raised thereby and their top end 90 deflected inwards by edge 92. The lower end of jack 20 engaged between arms 51, 52 of the selector jack is deflected to withdraw the butt 25. In this position Figure 4 undesirable movement of the jack is prevented by engagement of the lower end between lug 85 and surface 57b, and of the upper end between recess 95 and surface 79b. Selected jacks are deflected by the device to avoid cam 57 allowing butts 25 to remain in track 30 to knit or tuck. In this position Figure 5 the bottom of the jack is trapped by lug 85 and surface 57b, the top lug 15a, 79a. The electromagnetic devices may comprise a lever 70 raised to the level of butt 60 by an energised coil 80. Alternatively permanent magnets (150 Fig. 7 not shown) fixed to pivoting selector jacks are attracted or repelled by an electromagnet (151). In a further embodiment an oblique selector butt (60 Fig. 6 not shown) engages a corresponding slot (122) in a cam (121) moved radially by an electromagnet. Radial movement of the cam raises or lowers the selector so that its oblique upper surface (130) pivots the lower end of the jack (20) as required. The stitch cam and corresponding cam defining the lower edge of the cam track with its pivoting tuck cam are adjustable vertically as a unit.
