Needle selection in a circular knitting machine takes place by means of an electromagnet 1 which operates on the needlejacks 3 to attract them into a selected position, the pole of the electromagnet 1a being sloped away from the needle cylinder in the direction of relative rotation thereof. The guide 9 returns all needles to their unselected position on rotation of the needle cylinder. The jacks Fig. 2 (not shown) pivot about the point of connection with the needle. A ramp 13 Figs. (7-9) (not shown) may be used after the point of selection to separate the selected and unselected jacks. Several modifications of electromagnet, including auxiliary electromagnets to erase residual magnetism in the jacks, and jacks are described. In one modification Fig. 6 (not shown) the guide 9 returns the jacks to a central position where two electromagnets in opposition place the jacks in selected or unselected positions.
