Abstract

1,249,977. Knitting-machines. WILLIAM COTTON Ltd. 29 May, 1969 [6 June, 1968], No. 26903/68. Heading D1C. A method of doubling loops on a straight bar knitting machine comprises simultaneously transferring a plurality of spaced groups of loops 1L-7L form doubled loops 10L-60L in spaced groups of loops and thereafter successively transferring progressively smaller numbers of the spaced groups of loops so as to progressively close up the groups. The successive transfers result in additional doublings 70L-110L between those originally formed. The transfer points 19 are selectively moved to an operative position by control elements 3 frictionally mounted in beds 13 over each half of the needle bed. When the narrowing head is raised before the first transfer, element butts 3a, 4a strike slides 20a, 21a above all but a centre group of elements. All elements are thereby projected, but spaced groups are retracted, when the head lowers by engagement of butts 3b with projections of a bar 28. The stitches are transferred one needle space. Before each of the following transfers all elements are raised by a bar 29 and strike the slides which are progressively moved outwards. The slides are moved by engagement of racks fixed thereto with a rotated pinion (38 Fig. 3 not shown) and abut limit stops. Transfer over two spaces to close the gaps and double again, then occurs, 2TS to 6TS. The slides may be connected to lead screws when required for fashioning.
