Abstract
1,160,832. Knitting-machines. G. STIBBE & CO. Ltd. 22 July, 1968 [2 Aug., 1967], No. 35501/67. Heading D1C. A knitting machine latch needle has the latch 2 formed as a plate pivoted on a slot between cheeks of the stem and adapted to swing from the back, Fig. 3, to the front, Fig. 1, to close the hook. The top edge 3 of the latch cooperates with the tip 10 of the hook to prevent ,the yarn being caught between the two. The back edge 5 of the latch is shaped to cam against the base of the needle trick and to cause the latch to close when the needle is lowered. The top edge 3 is also sloped to cause the yarn loop to press against it to open the latch when the needle is raised. Alternatively, the latch can be extended at its lower end as at 27, Fig. 11, to engage a cam 28 for positively closing the latch. Another arrangement provides a jack 29, Fig. 12, which is manipulated in sequence with the needle movement to engage the backs of the latches and close them. The latch may take the form of a U- shaped member engaging on either side of the needle stem.
