Mechanism for laterally deflecting the hook ends of selected needles of one bed of a cylinder and dial rib machine, for transferring the loops held by these needles to the corresponding needles of the other bed, or for accepting loops transferred from the needles of the other bed, comprises a pair of coaxial spur wheels 19, 20 arranged to rotate together and to mesh with the needles 5 at spaced points along the needle shanks, the teeth 20a of one wheel 20 being offset with respect to the teeth 19a of the other wheel. The needles are selected for the transfer operation by patterning mechanism, and the wheels 19, 20 are supported upon a bracket movable under pattern control to bring the wheels into or out of operative engagement with the needles ; screw means are provided for adjusting the amount of engagement of the wheels with the needles. To provide for controlling the magnitude of deflection of the needles, projections 19c, 19d are provided upon the wheel 19 nearer the needle butts to engage a projection 20b upon the wheel 20, adjusting screws being arranged in tapped holes 20c in the projection 20b to engage the projection 19c so as to deter- -mine the relative angular positions of the wheels 19, 20. The surfaces of the teeth 20a engaging the needles may be cut back. The needles may be as described in Specification 804,878. Specifications 520,417, 520,900 and 535,162 also are referred to.
