[Class 74 (ii).] In machines for the production of plated work at times, and of plain, i.e. unplated work at other times, the yarns are laid or passed over or to the back of the sinker nibs 40 so as not to be caught by them, e.g. during reciprocation, by advancing the sinker cap as described below, or otherwise. The plating loops are drawn out so as effectually to cover the ground yarn, which is under substantial tension. The plating guide is placed out of action, prior to knitting plain courses, by a vertical sliding movement. During the last complete circular course preceding the knitting of the heel a cam-controlled abutment lever 21 is lowered and this permits the sinker cap 4 to move forward until arrested by the impact of the adjusting screw 32 against the yarn lever box 30, Fig. 8 (not shown). The sinkers are thus advanced earlier than would otherwise be the case, and their nibs 40 pass beneath the heel and toe yarn, in the same way as, during reverse plating, they pass beneath the ground and plating yarns. During the reverse strokes, the sinkers are advanced by a cam 94. The heel and toe yarn is also kept clear of the sinkers companion to the instep needles during reciprocating. Scissor action of the latches on the plating yarn is reduced or avoided by making the inner edges 104 concave. The adjacent faces of latch and needle shank are inclined at an angle of 22‹ when the latches are closed. A relatively short latch is used.
