Abstract
430,638. Knitting-machines. HEMPHILL CO., Central Falls, Rhode Island, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Lawson, R. H. ; 55, Cooke Street, Pawtucket, Rhode Island, U.S.A.) Oct. 18, 1934, No. 29842. Convention date, Oct. 25, 1933. [Class 74 (ii)] Circular knitting machines with independent needles applicable in particular to the knitting of heels and toes, split-work or other reciprocating work and wrap stripes, are provided with means whereby the use of a latch ring is avoided. Each needle is provided with a companion jack 4, the needle and jack are held together by the spring bands 5. Preparatory to reciprocatory knitting the jacks around one-half of the cylinder are separated from their needles by the action of an instep cam 23 on long jack butts 6, the corresponding needles being held down by passage of their butts under a ledge 27. The needles separated from jacks reciprocate idly with their butts below the knitting cams and retain their loops on the latches no latch ring being necessary to prevent closure of the latches. As reciprocating knitting proceeds, the short jack butts are engaged in turn by a narrowing pick 29 to join the instep jacks and subsequently are picked down by widening picks. The pick 29 is guided in its movement by a bracket 30 with bayonet slot 31. Specifications 20101/09 and 314,876, [both in Class 74 (ii)], are referred to.
