[Class 110 (i).] Pumping machines.-A submerged rotary pump is directly driven by a motor 1 arranged above it in a casing 2 of inverted bell type. To ensure that sufficient air is in the casing to prevent the liquid from reaching the motor, compressed air is supplied through the pipe 3. The end of this pipe is carried so far down the casing that, in the event of a break in the pipe or of a failure in air supply, the air pipe is cut off by the rising liquid before it reaches the motor.
