Abstract

383,294. Dynamo-electric machines ; centrifugal pumps. PULSOMETER ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. and BJÍRNSTAD, J., Nine Elms Iron Works, Reading. May 18, 1931, No. 14639. [Class 35.] A submersible unit comprises in combination a centrifugal pump 1 or other device to be driven, an electric motor 2 coupled thereto, the enclosing casing 3 of the motor being directly carried by the device, and an external air compressor 6 driven from the motor by gearing 10. Air for cooling the motor is obtained from above the water level through a pipe 5, pumped into the casing 3 at a pressure high enough to prevent ingress of liquid, and discharged from the casing, for example, through a spring-loaded relief valve 4.
