Abstract
218,388. Gwynne, N. G., and Breeze, J. F. April 5, 1923. Pumping-machines. - A submersible motor pump set consists of a centrifugal pump a and a high speed hydraulic motor b or Pelton wheel provided with an impeller m to assist the exhaust from the motor against the head of liquid due to the submersion of the set. The rotors of the pump and motor are mounted on the same shaft and this is preferably horizontal. The casings c, c<1> may be cast separately and fixed to a common bed plate. The bearings h, j are provided in recesses in the casing walls, and the bearings k, l on the inner sides of the casings have glands and stuffing boxes to prevent leakage. In marine salvage operations the set is lowered into the sea as shown in Fig. 2, by means of a cable o, and a pipe r capable of standing great pressure connects the inlet of the motor b with the delivery of a pumping plant s driven by a high speed engine t on the salvage vessel. The exhaust from the motor b may be direct into the sea, or may be connected to to the suction of the primary pump s or to a tank from which the pump s can draw its supply. The suction of the pump s is in the hull below the surface of the sea and the suction of the submerged pump a is connected to a compartment of the sunken vessel.
