Abstract

Disc-supported-blade fans and pumps; casings. -A centrifugal pump particularly applicable to steam condensers has cover plates 10, 11 carrying intake branches 12, 13 sloping at an angle of 45‹, and has a rotor 1 provided with two sets 2, 3 of blades arranged on either side so that, at the periphery of the rotor, the thickness of a blade on one set is equal to the space facing it and bounded bv two blades of the other set. The branch 12 is connected to a foot-valve 15 in the pit 16 and the branch 13 is connected to a vessel 19 containing air and steam. The volute 20 with the dffuser 21 and delivery branch 22 is secured to the cover plates 10, 11 in any desired angular position. When the pump starts, the water jets from one side of the rotor create a suction effect upon the other side, and this, added to the direct action of the blades 3, expels the air or steam. The working surfaces of the blades in this form are all concave. In a modification the blades 3 have convex surfaces, and the intake branch 13 is connected with the branch 12 to the pit 16 as well as to the vessel 19. A three-way cock enables the branch 13 to be put into communication with the pit for starting purposes and then in communication with the vessel 19. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the rotor 1 with two water intakes 30, 31 has cheeks 32, 33 carrying convex blades 34, 35 alternating with the concave blades of the rotor, the thickness of blades and spaces being equal, as explained above with regard to Fig. 1. The volutes 38, 39 communicate through a three-way cock with the vessel 19. The cover plates 40, 41 have tubular extensions 42, 43 loosely surrounding the water intakes 44, 45. Lubricators 46, 47 fill the grooves 48, 49 with thick grease; this prevents a back flow of air when the volutes are connected to the vessel 19. For use as a centrifugal mixer, the machine shown in Fig. 1 may be inverted and hoppers 52, 53 with regulating-dampers 54, 55 attached to the tubes 12, 13, as shown in Fig. 6.
