315,321. Motte, C. M. July 11, 1928, [Convention date]. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Propelling and steering by water jets.-Jet propulsion apparatus for ships comprises a rotary pump 1 with a driving shaft 2 passing through a stuffing box in a volute casing 6 which has an axial intake opening 8 and a circumferential delivery passage which has a vane 11 for controlling the passages 9, 10, for forward or reverse running. In an intermediate position of the vane the delivery is divided equally to provide a neutral action. The shafts 2 may be placed horizontally or vertically in the ship with the intake of the casing adjacent the plane of the ships plating. The units may be used in pairs for providing steering facilities.
