Abstract

546,223. Bearings ; lubricating. HAYWARD TYLER & CO., Ltd., and HOWARD, G. P. E. May 5, 1941, No. 5829. [Classes 12 (i) and 12 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVI] In a submersible pump comprising a centrifugal pump 2 and an electric motor 6, the shafts 3, 5 of which are coupled at 4 inside a member 7 connecting the pump and motor casings, as described in Specification 546,222, [Group XXVI], the bearing 17 of the shaft 5 is enclosed in a cavity containing liquid which is circulated by a disc 15 on the shaft so that it passes between the bearing shell 11 and a fixed sleeve 14 and then through ports 19 in 11 to grooves 18 in the bearings. Part of the liquid passes through ports 16 in shell 11 and through a thrust bearing 9 into the shell 8 to which it transmits the back of the bearing 17, the shell being cooled by the liquid passing over the outside to the pump inlet. The lower bearing 37 is cooled and lubricated by liquid entering through ports 39, 40 in the shaft 5 into a space between the shaft and bearing, then through ports in the bearing into grooves on the outer face of the bearing, from which it passes in one direction to the space 45 and in the other direction through a space between the bearing shell 34 and a sleeve 42 to port 43 opening into spaces 45. The liquid is circulated by a disc 41 on the shaft 5. The motor armature may be cooled by liquid from the bearing passing through peripheral grooves in the armature. The upper pump bearing, Fig. 2, is housed in a shell 26 carried by a cap 27 on the end plate 29 of.the pump casing, and water from the pump passes along the bearing into the interior of the cap where it is circulated by a rotating disc 31, and transmits the heat from the bearing to the cap 27 which is cooled by the pumped water passing over it to the delivery pipe 30.
