Abstract

[Also in Groups XXVI and XXXV] In a motor-driven centrifugal pump, the shaft bearing adjacent the pump impeller 11 is a pivot bearing 20, 21 of conical or curved shape, while the bearing at the other end of the shaft is a sleeve bearing 16, 17. Both bearings, which may be of cemented carbide, are immersed in and lubricated by the water or other liquid being pumped. The smallness of the bearing surfaces ensures that the bearing pressures are sufficiently high to cause any deposits from the liquid to be worn away. The motor rotor 5 is isolated from the stator 4 by a tubular shield 6, leakage between the pump and motor compartments being reduced by a shaft seal 13. A spring 14 provides axial loading for both the seal 13 and the pivot bearing 20, 21. A diaphragm 8 equalizes the pressures in the pump and motor compartments.
