Abstract

1428533 Centrifugal pumps KONINKLIJKE MACHINEFABRIEK STORK NV 4 July 1973 [4 July 1972] 31912/73 Heading F1C A vertically disposed centrifugal pump for fluid metal, e.g. sodium, comprises a rotor journalled in a hydrostatic bearing, the rotor being provided with an auxiliary impeller whose suction side communicates with the pressure space of the pump and whose pressure side communicates with the bearing so as to feed pumped fluid to the bearing, the fluid being discharged from the bearing to a low-pressure space in the pump. The pump depends from the top wall of a vessel 2 containing the fluid to be pumped. The impeller shaft 4 is journalled in a hydrostatic bearing comprising a stationary sleeve 20 and a sleeve 21 secured to the impeller 3. An auxiliary impeller 22 draws in fluid downstream of diffuser vanes 6 and impels it through a bearing gap 23 to a space 17 which communicates via apertures 18 in the vanes 6 with the space within the vessel 2. In a modification, the inner sleeve of the bearing is stationary and the outer sleeve is carried by the impeller, the auxiliary impeller then being formed on the back of the impeller 3.
