Abstract

Tar or other bituminous material, especially for road-making, is fluxed with a diluent containing unsaturated hydrocarbons, for example shale oil especially "topped" oil, and solar oil. Lime or other compound reacting alkaline, e.g. barium oxide, magnesium oxide, basic silicates, Portland or other cements and carbides, may be added to accelerate the hardening. In an example 100 parts of tar are mixed with 20 parts of bitumen at 50 DEG C. and this mixture is fluxed with 20-25 parts of shale oil which has been topped up to 190 DEG C. The mixture is applied to 30-40 times its weight of stone splits or grit which has previously been mixed with 1/2 -1 per cent of powdered lime.
