Abstract

340,285. Doors &c. for furnaces, gas retorts, &c. GAS LIGHT & COKE CO. and THORMAN, J. S.. 84, Horseferry Road, London. Sept. 24, 1929, No. 28963. [Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i).] A feeding door or cover 1 for furnaces, gas retorts, coke ovens, gas producers, &c. is universally suspended from a lever 3 pivoted to the door frame at 30 and raised and lowered by a rope or chain 4, the lever being provided with a projection 35 which prevents tilting of the door relatively to the lever as it engages and disengages the aperture. The door is of truncated conical section and fits into a seating frame 11 ; the outer face 15 is convex and provided with a recess 16 to receive the ball end 17 of a forked link 18 pivoted at 2 to the operating lever 3. A cover-plate 19 fits over the ball 17 and is secured to the door by screws 20. The lever 3 is pivoted by a pin 30 to lugs 28, 29 on the frame 11 and has at its free end a slot 32 in which takes a pin 5 connected by a link 6 to the wire rope 4 which passes over pulleys and carries a counterweight provided with an operating handle. The slot 32 has enlarged portions at its ends and by altering the position of the pin 5 in the slot the power exerted on the door by the counterweight may be varied. Lugs 21 .. 24 having undercut recesses on the outer face of the door are adapted to take a tool by which the door can be moved in all directions to seat it in the frame 11 and provide a gastight joint. The hollow space in the door is filled with insulating material 36 and the frame 11 is made hollow for the circulation of air, steam or water.
