Abstract

326,173. Gas Light & Coke Co., Leech, W. J. B., Hay, S., Hollings, H., and Burton, A. E. Dec. 3, 1928. Dip-pipes, - Dip-pipes are provided with a movable sleeve or lining with operating means external to the dip-pipe, for covering or uncovering openings in the wall of the dip-pipe or in the moving member. A dip-pipe 1 has four openings 4 which may be more or less covered by a closure member 6 adapted to be drawn over the lower part of the dip-pipe by means of a lever 8 and connecting rod either manually, or by means such as described in Specification 302,437. The combined area of the openings may thus be controlled so that the pull on the retorts is maintained constant during the whole period of gasification. In a modification, the member 6 may be arranged within the dip-pipe; and in another modification, the dip-pipe may be arranged to move within a stationary sleeve.
