Producers.-To diminish loss of fuel during the clinkering period of a producer, natural draught is replaced by a suction so controlled that the draught is kept above the minimum requisite for avoiding dangerous escape of hot gas through the clinkering doors. Good quality gas is thus made during the clinkering period. The gas off-take may be above the freshly charged coke so that the gas is reduced in temperature before it enters the fan, the fuel is preheated and tar and moisture removed from it. The suction fan may be operated not only during the clinkering period but more or less continuously, so that a proportion of the hot producer gas may pass through the green coke.
