Ascension pipes. - Each retort mouthpiece a of a bench of retorts is made integral with a section b of the standpipe so that only a single partition divides the mouthpiece and standpipe, a detachable seating c being provided therein for the retort valve d. Shield plates e may be provided to prevent scrubbing liquid from entering the mouthpieces. Adjacent standpipe sections may be connected by spigot and socket joints, and to facilitate erection one half of the socket portion may be detachable and held in position by bolts passing through lugs formed upon abutting parts of the two socket halves.
