Abstract

310,175. Hobson, Ltd., H. M., and Harding, H. April 13, 1928. Vehicle-window opening and closing apparatus; windows having signalling apertures.-Upper and lower vertically-sliding sections of a vehicle window are mounted in the same guide channels and are actuated by the same mechanism from within the vehicle so that the sections may be separated to open a space below the upper section for signalling by hand &c. when said section is fully raised. The actuating means may comprise a chain C and pair of studs D, E, engaging the upper and lower sashes respectively, as shown in Fig. 1 with the sashes fully closed. During the first opening movement of the lower sash by the stud E, the stud D will move horizontally between the upper pulleys without opening the upper sash. When the stud D begins to move vertically the two sashes descend together, and during the final opening movement the bottom sash remains stationary. The chain is actuated by a handle H and gearing. The independent movement of the bottom sash may be given by a lever K, Fig. 4, fast on the gear H<4>, the top sash being connected to a lever J which has a lost-motion connection by pin-and-slot J<1>, H<5>, with the gear H<4> to which it is connected by a spring J<2>. In a further modification, Fig. 8, the upper sash is actuated by the spring-controlled lever J and the lower sash by articulated levers K, K<3>, the levers K<3>, J, being connected bv pin-and-slot and the lever K driven by the spindle H<3>. In this arrangement, the window sashes are separated as shown, and the lower sash is first raised by turning the spindle H<3> clockwise, both sashes being lowered by continued movement.
