Abstract

13,485. Eckey, F., and West, C. June 8. Vehicle windows; vehicle - window opening and closing apparatus.-Sliding windows are carried by the lower ends of spring-controlled lazy-tongs levers, the upper ends of which are mounted on the inside top rail of the window well, so that the lazy - tongs open when the window is opened, and vice versa. The sash is preferably carried by a bar 40 connected to secondary lazy - tongs 3, the lower members 29, 29 of which are rigidly connected with the members 30, 30 respectively of the main lazytongs 2, so that the secondary lazy-tongs collapses as the main tongs open, and vice versa. The sash is operated by means of a handle 17 which actuates a pinion 15 gearing with a toothed sector 10 and also with a second pinion 16 which meshes with a sector 11. The sector 10 is pinned to a spindle 9, the squared end of which carries the lever 8, while the sector 11 is loosely mounted on the same spindle and carries the lever 8 on the squared end of its boss 11. The sectors 10, 11 are further secured to the levers 8, 8 by brackets 14, 13 respectively. The means for actuating the pinion 15 and for locking the sash in any position comprises the operating-handle 17, connected to a cup-shaped member 19 having cam-slots 26 engaging rollers 28 carried by a circular plate 23, the face of which is provided with projections 22 kept in engagement with teeth 21 on a fixed plate 20 by means of a spring 24. A central square hole is formed in the plate 23 to engage the squared end of the spindle carrying the pinion 15. When the handle 17 is turned, the projections 22 on the plate 23 are first released from the teeth 21 on the plate 20 by means of the cam-slots 26 and rollers 28, further rotation of the handle actuating the lazy-tongs mechanism by means of the pinions 15, 16 and sectors 10, 11. The sash is balanced by means of spring drums 41, 41 connected by cords &c. 43, 43a to the lazy-tongs levers 30, 30.
