Abstract

24,077. Smithurst, P. A. Oct. 20. [Cognate Application 25,977/09.] Window blinds. - Rattling of the window blinds of railway and like vehicles, ships' cabins, &c. is prevented by a pair of jamming- bars mounted in the frame on each side of the sash and actuated by a rotatable handle operating the gear which raises and lowers the sash. In the arrangement shown, the sash is raised and lowered by endless-chain gearing i, j, n operated by the handle p. On the spindle o that carries the handle p is mounted a wheel x, the teeth of which engage a tumbler w having projections v which engage notches at the ends of two levers s, pivoted to the casing at t and engaging the lower ends of the two jamming- bars q. When the handle is turned in either direction, the tumbler w is tilted and depresses the inner ends of the levers s, so that the jamming-bars q are raised against the action of springs and withdrawn from the sash. When the sash has reached the desired position, a slight turn of the handle in the opposite direction enables the jamming-bars to be drawn down into action by the springs. In the modification shown in Fig. 8 the jamming-bars are operated by the engagement of a cam 9 on the spindle 0 with a wheel 8 mounted on the inner ends of the levers s. The upper ends of the jamming-bars q may be hinged to the frame, as shown at z, Fig. 6, or may be bent to engage inclined guides 4, as shown in Fig. 5.
