Crank chambers.-In two-stroke-cycle engines using crank-case compression and having the crank case and associated gear box in communication, the clearance in the gear box is reduced by a part. annular block 20 placed between the driven wheels 8, 9 of the change-speed gear and surrounding the lay shaft 14. The movable dogclutch member 16 is keyed to this shaft and slides within the block 20. It has a groove 18 on its outer surface, with which engages a projection 28 on the inside of a segment 27 formed on its exterior with rack teeth 29. A pinion 35 engages this rack and is used to alter the position of the clutch member 16 for changing gear. The segment 27 has three small recesses 30 with which engages a spring-pressed stop 38 to hold the clutch in any one of its three positions. The block 20 is screwed to the face 23 of the combined crank and gear case 2, its flange 24 forming a spigot for positioning the case cover 4.
