Driving gears.-In an internal-combustion or other engine, the path of the crank pin is shortened in relation to the piston stroke by interposing rack-and-pinion gearing between the piston and connecting-rod. The connecting-rod 3, Fig. 1, is secured to a pinion 1 which engages a stationary rack 4 and is rotated by a rack 5 carried by the piston. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, wherein the crank path is further reduced, the rod 3 is pivoted to the pinion 1 between the vertical plane of its axis and the stationary guide 4. The piston and cylinder are relieved from lateral pressure by off-setting the crank shaft as shown, the engine running clockwise. A single-cylinder, internal-combustion engine with off-set crank shaft is shown in Fig. 4. The piston has a segmental projection 12 carrying a rack 14 secured to a flange 13 thereon, and a stationary rack 16 engaged by the pinion 21 is mounted in the lower part of the cylinder wall. The pinions and racks are provided with smooth rolling-tracks. A twin engine with connected upper cylinder ends is described wherein the pinions engaged by the piston racks are connected by a rod to a single shaft.
