337,343. Triumph Cycle Co., Ltd., Phillips, J. A., and Kirkland, T. A. S. Aug. 1, 1929. Divided on 336,336, [Class 7 (ii), Internal-combustion engines, Arrangement &c. of]. Variable-speed gearing. - In a change-speed gear comprising two pairs of gears, always in mesh, of which the driven gears are selectively locked to a shaft by a sliding dog clutch member 16, this member and rack-and-pinion gear for operating it are journaled in a common block 20. The member 16 is keyed to a lay shaft 14 and has an external groove engaged by a projection on a segment 27 formed on its exterior with rack teeth for engagement with a pinion 35. Three recesses in the segment co-operate with a spring- pressed top 38 to hold the clutch member in its three positions. The block 20 is screwed to the face 23 of the combined crank and gear case 2, its flange 24 forming a spigot for positioning the case cover.
