Abstract

309,305. Leitner, H. April 4, 1928. Battery lamps.-In a miners' lamp an oilimmersed switch is used to prevent sparking at the contacts and is adapted to insert a resistance in the battery circuit in order to give a dim light of long duration. A cylindrical casing 1 is provided with a square recess and resilient buffers 7 for a battery 2, a cap 3 having locking mechanism 5, and an oil-tight container 8 for the switch mechanism. The battery poles 10 are connected respectively to a terminal 17 and a lamp contact through spring blades 9 housed in recesses 9<1> of the casing. A resistance 11 is supported between brackets 12 which are connected to contacts 13, 14. A contact-arm 16 pivoted at 17 enables the lamp 15 to be connected directly to the battery through the contact 13 or optionally to insert in series therewith the resistance 11 through the contact 14 or to switch the lamp off, as shown in Fig. 5. The contact-arm 16 is controlled externally by means of an arm 19 and attached spindle 20 passing through a stuffing box 21. An additional lamp or a secondary filament in the main lamp may be used as a resistance.
