Variable-speed gearing comprises cylindrical toothed wheels with helical teeth which are relatively thick, wide, and steep. The thickness n, b, Fig. 2, is made great as in effect by spreading apart the profiles of the teeth and filling in with material. The width of the wheels o<1>, 0<2>, Fig. 1, is correspondingly increased, so that a tooth is always operative. The pitch of the teeth is increased to about 45‹. The end thrust is taken by bearings with deep grooves The change-speed gear is of the countershaft type with alternatively engageable claw clutches on the driven shaft.
