311,334. Scurlock Gear Corporation, (Assignees of -Fickett, E. L.). May 9, 1928, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Differential balance or gearing comprises bevel gearing with spiral teeth constructed so that the teeth are in engagement at their ends b as well as either at their outer gear or pitch surfaces c or at their inner gear surfaces i. To this end, the teeth of gear 7 project far enough within teeth of companion gear 5 so as to be overhung. Planetary gears 7 drive side gears 5, 6 differentially. The effect of the end engagement at b is to prevent gears 7 from tilting. The effect of the spiral, which is inclined at about 55‹ to the pitch circle, is to produce internal friction, so that when one road wheel encounters a slipping surface, it does not spin, and the other wheel continues to drive.
