Abstract

Toothed pinions comprise gear portions of different efliciency with a view to securing in differential or balance gearing the advantages of a locked differential when a vehicle is running straight, with differential action when one wheel is driven faster by external agency, as in turning corners. The gears of the differential have teeth of ordinary bevel, spur, or worm kind alternating with portions of less efficiency adapted to lock themselves. Thus a pair of planet gears 6, 7 each has a pair of inclines 18, 19 inclined in opposite directions, the arrangement being such that one pinion is in a position to jam when the other is not. The inclines 18, 19 coact with inclines 20. 21 on the side differential members 10, 11, these inclined members and the ordinary teeth working alternately when the differential is running continuously.
