592,438. Differential gearing. RANDALL, R. R. March 6, 1944, No. 4127. [Class 80(ii)] A differential gear for vehicles includes worm gearing which prevents " spinning " of a wheel on the loss of traction. The driving gear housing 4 driven from a bevel pinion 2 and gear 1 carries two bevel planets 7 (one only being shown) on transverse shafts 8 meshing with crown wheels 6 on the driven shafts 5. Each planet bevel 7, or its shaft 8, is provided with a worm gear 9 engaging a wormwheel 10 on another transverse shaft 11. Differential movement as when making a turn is allowed, since both worms drive, but on one wheel losing its tractive grip it cannot be driven from the other wheel owing to the irreversible nature of the worm gearing. In a modified arrangement two oppositely arranged bevel planets are provided for each crown wheel, each of which carries a worm gear meshing with worm wheels on separate transverse shafts.
