Crucible furnaces. - In a crucible furnace the gases from tangentially-delivering burners are guided by helically-formed surfaces. With a single burner delivering through an orifice f the helical surface h may make one complete turn as shown, and where two diametrically opposite burners are used, the surfaces make only half a turn. In both cases the pitch of the helix is so chosen that the circulating gases do not interfere with the flame at the burner mouth. A helical rib which may be formed on the crucible, may be arranged to enclose completely the stream of heating-gases.
