Abstract

Variable-speed ratchet gearing. - In a slicing- machine, the pawl 8 engaging the ratchet wheel 7 on the feed screw, is controlled by an annular member 6 having an internal cam face 6<b>. The member 6 is rotatably mounted on a support projecting from the side of the carriage 3 and is adjusted, to regulate the period of engagement of the pawl and consequently the slice thickness, by a rod 5 hinged to a pivoted member 4 actuated by a knob 4a, carrying a graduated slice-thickness scale 4<a>. The pawl is pressed into engagement with the ratchet 7 by a spring 12 and is mounted on a bell crank 10 oscillated by levers 13, 14, the latter being pivoted at 15 to the carriage 3 and having an end roller 16 engaging with a cam truck 17a. To disengage the pawl 8 from the ratchet wheel, an annulus 6<c>, freely revoluble and having an internal cam surface similar to that of the annulus 6, is moved anticlockwise by an attached handle 6<c>. When the machine is restarted, the projection 6<d> on the annulus 6<e> contacts with a stop 19 on the base 18, the annulus 6<e> being thus rotated clockwise and the pawl re-engaged with the ratchet.
