Abstract

273,845. Mac Pherson, D. April 20, 1926. Feeding webs.-In a stamp-vending machine, a vertical operating member 35, Figs. 1 and 2, is reciprocated by turning a handle 28, the shaft 29 of which carries a ratchet wheel 31 with a crank pin 33 engaging a slotted member 34 on the member 35. Backward rotation of the wheel 31 is prevented by a pawl 32. An offset portion of the rod 35 during its downward movement flexes a spring 43 connected by a link 44 to a bridle 45 which rocks about a shaft 46. On the upwa.rd movement of the rod 35 a pawl 52 pivoted to the bridle drives frictionally a large toothed wheel 48. The pawl 52 has an india-rubber or pliable face 53 for contacting with the wheel, and another spring-controlled pawl 54 with a pliable face 55 prevents backward rotation of the wheel 48. The use of the friction pawls with pliable faces prevents backlash. The wheel 48 meshes with the upper of two intermeshing pinions having lateral extensions covered with fluted india-rubber to form rollers 49, 50 which feed forward the stamp strip from a roll 57. The axis of the lower roller 50 is supported by two springs 51. The rod 35 has a lateral extension with two stops 39, 40 for actuating a bell-crank lever 41, Fig. 2, connected to a second bell-crank lever 42, the horizontal arm of which forms a knife and severs a stamp at the end of the upward movement of the rod 35. A screwed rod 56 adjustable by a milled nut limits the movement of the pawl 52 to adjust the stamp feed.
