Abstract

193,138. Kaspar, F. Nov. 16, 1921. Damping-machines.-An apparatus for severing stamps from a roll, moistening them and attaching them to envelopes &c. is operated by a spring plunger which operates the moistening device by a cam-lever and the stamp feed through a rack and pinion. The moistening pad 22 is carried on a spring arm 3 attached to a lever 13 pressed against the frame of the machine by a spring, so as to work with considerable friction. During the first portion of the descent of the plunger, the lever 13 is prevented from moving by a piece 17 on the plunger engaging with a projection 16 on it. A roller 12 on the plunger then strikes against a curved arm 14 on the lever and forces it outwards, drawing the pad 22 across the stamp until the end 19 of the arm 3 engages with a detent 47, and a projection 52 on a second arm 15 of the lever 13 strikes against a step 49 on the frame of the machine. The lever 13 remains in this position until the plunger has nearly completed its upward movement, when the roller 12 strikes against the arm 15 and returns the lever to its original position, the roller 12 travelling freely for some space between the arms 14 and 15.
