Butter-spreaders.-In a bread slicing and buttering machine, the slice-feed adjustment mechanism and the buttering-device are interconnected so that the buttering-device is automatically positioned for all slice thicknesses. Fig. 1 shows, in plan, a machine with a disc-knife 4 and a bread-holder 6, reciprocated by a rod 8, the feed-screw 16 being intermittently moved by ratchet and pawl mechanism on the shaft 24 through gearing 20, 22. The slice thickness is regulated by a handle 44, having a spring-pressed pin 50 which engages holes in a quadrant 46 the handle 44 being mounted on a shaft 42 which adjusts a roller-stop 34, on an arm 36, through levers 38, 40. The spring- pressed pawl 28 is mounted on an arm 30. revoluble on the shaft 24, which contacts with the roller-stop 34 when the bread-carrier is remote from the knife 4. The spaces between adjacent holes in the quadrant 46 correspond to one tooth of the pawl travel on the ratchet wheel. The buttering-device 10 is carried by a bracket 54, slidably mounted on the extension 56 of the base frame, having a depending lug 58, with an oblique cam face 60. The shaft 42 passes through the lug 58 and is provided with a pin 62 which engages the face 60, and the lug 58 is pressed against the pin 62 by a spring 64 and washer 66 on the shaft 42. The buttering-device 10 is, by contact of the pin 62 and face 60 and the action of the returning-spring, adjusted to accommodate the various loaf positions corresponding to various slice thicknesses. A spring-pressed pullout pin 18 engages the feed-screw and a plate 12 advances the loaf.
