Cutting slices in succession.-A slicing machine comprises a carriage 2 pivoted to a base 1 by a bolt 5 and adapted to be oscillated past a rotary knife 3, the carriage being fitted with an adjustable platform 21 having guides 20 carrying a number of feed tables 19 on which different substances may be clamped, the arrangement being such that any selected one A of the substances can be moved into operative relationship with the knife by adjusting the platform. The carriage is oscillated by a fly-wheel shaft 9 through bevel gearing 10, 11, a crank disc 7, and a connecting-rod 8. The knife is also driven by the shaft 9 through bevel gearing 14, 15 and chain gearing 17. The platform 21 is centred on the carriage 2 by a pin 22 and is adapted to be locked thereto by a spring- pressed detent 23 pivoted on the edge of the carriage and co-operating with a number of slots 24 in the rim of the platform. A lever 38 mounted below the carriage is normally pressed by a spring 38<a> against a stop 39 into a position preventing withdrawal of the detent 23, but, as the carriage approaches the end of the slicing stroke, the lever contacts with a fixed stop 40 and is moved thereby so as to permit withdrawal of the detent and adjustment of the platform. The feed screw 26 of each table 19 carries a ratchet wheel 29 coacting with a pawl 30 carried by a lever 31 connected by a link 33 to a lever 34 pivoted on the platform 21. During the oscillation of the carriage, the lever 34 corresponding to the substance A being sliced coacts with a striker 35 adjustably mounted in a bracket 35<a> on the base so as to effect intermittent rotation of the screw 26.
