Cutting slices in succession.-A slicing-machine comprises, in combination, a slicing knife, a support for the substance to be sliced, means for feeding the support intermittently towards the knife, a motor, and means whereby the motor can rotate the knife and also move it to and fro to slice the material. As shown in Fig. 1, the shaft 12 carries a sprocket 17 connected by a chain 23 to sprockets 18, 19 within a housing 16 on a bracket which swings on the shaft 12. The knife 22 is mounted on the shaft 20, and the shaft 12 is driven through worm gearing from a motor secured to the stationary frame 11. The .sprocket 19 carries a crank pin 25 connected by a rod 24 to a pin 26 on the frame 11, the housing, which is thereby oscillated, having an arcuate slot 27 for passage of the pin 26. The knife 22 does not advance during the slicing stroke beyond the vertical plane of the side 10<b> of the slicereceiver 10<a>, thereby minimizing the risk of accidents. The slice feed is effected by a rod 33 operated by a pin 34 on the housing 16 and connected to the ratchet pawl lever 32, a ratchet shroud 35 adjustable by the rod 37 and lever 36 being provided. In a modification, the driving- motor is carried on the oscillating knife bracket and, being on the other side of the pivot, counterbalances the knife. In order to permit rotation of the knife without bodily oscillation, e.g. for grinding, the connecting rod 24 may be formed as in Fig. 3. The pin 26 is normally secured, by a screw 40, in the offset portion 39. The screw 40 may, however, be released, rotation of the wheel 19 then causing the rod 24 to reciprocate without moving the housing 16, the guiding groove 38 being slidable on the stationary pin 26. In a modification, Fig. 5, the housing 16 may be locked against oscillation, the crank pin 25 being on a disc 41 driven frictionally by the sprocket 19 which is held against the disc by the spring 42.
